Free Smoke Alarm Installation
At-Risk community members in the Triangle area can now benefit from the CFA’s smoke alarm installation service, with members of the Buxton Fire Brigade now available to install modern 10year lithium battery smoke alarms at no cost to the property owners or occupants.
People with a disability can be at a disproportionate risk in a house fire, particularly if they cannot self-evacuate while other people may need support to improve their fire safety and planning. In particular, elderly people who don't have family or community assistance readily at hand can struggle to replace aged smoke alarms or install additional alarms.
CFA recommends that smoke alarms be installed in every living area and bedroom. The increase in products and devices that we use in our home these days mean that fire could start anywhere in our living areas and bedrooms. Modern home designs and the materials used in modern furnishings means a fire can develop and spread much more quickly than 30 or 40 years ago. Having smoke alarms in every living area and bedroom, including in hallways and stairs between floors increases the opportunity that a fire will be detected more quickly. This will give your family the best chance of escape.
CFA’s smoke alarm installation program aims to help people at higher risk in the community who, because of life circumstances, have less capacity or understanding to install their own smoke alarms because:
- they are older and/or less mobile,
- live with a disability,
- English is a second language, or
- are experiencing social or financial disadvantage.
Upon application, community members can request a visit by a qualified Brigade member to discuss your circumstances and, if eligible, two members will attend your property to discuss your home fire planning and install replacement or additional smoke alarms.
