Peter Cureton: Awards Presentations (20/04/2024)
CFA Life Membership
This evening Ex-Captain Peter Cureton was recognised for his ongoing commitment to CFA, over many years, through Vite Vite North and Buxton fire brigades.
Peter and Willie Cureton came to Buxton in November 2006 having purchased Cerberus Park in South Cathedral Lane, according to the Buxton history book. In the book, they explain how they came from a place called Vite Vite roughly half way between Ballarat and Colac and both of them were officers of the Vite Vite North Fire Brigade.
Peter first joined CFA in 1967 with the Vite Vite North brigade. He then joined Buxton Fire Brigade in 2007 and Willie joined a short while later.
Similar to Wayne Briggs, Peter and Willie had experience with the 1984 Ash Wednesday bushfires which impacted their farm at Vite Vite. The history book records 2 years after moving to Buxton, the Buxton farm was severely impacted by the Black Saturday fires but they saved the house.
Peter has made a considerable contribution to CFA; here and at Vite Vite.
He was an officer of the Vite Vite North brigade for over 20 years having served as 3rd Lieutenant from 1982 until 1988 when he took on the challenge of Captain. He was their officer-in-charge, for some 14 years, until 2002. Not only was he Captain for those years, but CFA’s records say he was concurrently the Communication Officer from 1988 until 1992.
As with his time at Vite Vite, at Buxton, Peter has served in a number of different capacities: 2nd Lieutenant from 2008 to 2010, followed by 1st Lieutenant from 2010 until 2012. He held the role of Group Delegate for a number of years and, during that time, was an officer of the Alexandra Group of Fire Brigades. Peter was a Deputy Group Officer for some four years between 2010 and 2014.
Without a doubt, Peter's years with the Buxton community have been enhanced by his commitment to improving and safeguarding the lives of our Community. He works tirelessly to help make Buxton a better place.
Peter was awarded Brigade Life Membership in October 2019 and tonight he is presented his 55 years CFA Service Medal along with CFA Life Membership.
Peter Cureton is a worthy recipient of CFA Life Membership. Unfortunately, Peter wasn’t able to attend the presentations and his award was accepted by Captain Paul Denham AFSM.
