Early morning call to Highway incident (07/03/2022)

Buxton and Taggerty brigades were responded to a motor vehicle incident on the Maroondah Highway between the two townships just after 6am this morning. Taggerty Captain, Tom Goldstraw, was first on-scene and assumed the role of Incident Controller. With the arrival of the first Buxton appliance, having accessed the scene as safe, Tom stood down the responding Taggerty units and transferred control to Buxton.

A vehicle travelling before sunrise hit an animal crossing the road which disabled the vehicle. The vehicle was partially blocking the road requiring the brigade to wait on scene until towing arrived.

It was disappointing that numerous vehicles passed the incident travelling well above 40kmh. When challenged, most declared they were not aware of the relevant Road Rules. If emergency vehicles are displaying flashing red or blue flashing lights, a vehicle must actually be able to stop and, regardless, only proceed through the scene if safe to do so and travel no faster than 40kmh. They may only increase speed once clear of any emergency services workers at the scene.

The brigade eventually cleared the scene just after 8:30am once the vehicle was loaded on to the tow truck.
