Prolonged Multi Agency Rescue (16/06/2022)

Warning: this article is sensitive and might upset some people. We have chosen to include this only because it was already published in local newspapers.

Yesterday, at 1:39pm, both Buxton and Marysville brigades were responded to a motor vehicle accident on the Buxton-Marysville Road involving a fully loaded tipper truck and trailer. Taggerty brigade was also requested for additional crews.

We would like to acknowledge the exceptional work done by Marysville and Alexandra SES crews and Ambulance Victoria, assisted by Marysville Towing, to free the passenger.

CFA resources were released around 5:30pm with Buxton returning at 8:20pm to assist with clean-up of the road and provide fire coverage while the vehicle was loaded on to the tow truck. Buxton Tanker 2 was responded later in the night to help clean the road surface; our thanks to Buxton Excavations for clearing the gravel and other debris from the road. Buxton Tanker 1 and Buxton Tanker 2 returned to station around 1:00am.

A long and difficult day for all involved.

As many will now be aware, yesterday local emergency services responded to a significant road rescue on the Buxton-Marysville Road. Our crew responded shortly after 1.30pm after a tipper truck and trailer loaded with gravel collided with a tree. Road rescue tools and heavy haulage equipment were used to free the heavily trapped and injured passenger.

The complex operation took an extended period of time, with dozens of responders from all agencies working together. Sadly, the second occupant died at the scene.

Our crew worked through the evening at the scene, also providing extensive lighting and rain protection while our rescue efforts continued. The scene was cleared around 1am after the road was rehabilitated and reopened. We headed back to LHQ and spent further time cleaning and refurbishing our vehicles and equipment, with members heading home well after 2am.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the occupants, and all those impacted by this event. We’d like to extend our gratitude to our fellow emergency services including @victoriapolice, @AmbulanceVictoria, @AlexandraVICSES, @Marysvillecfa, and @buxtoncfa for their teamwork and support at this challenging incident.

We also want to give a special mention to Marysville District Towing and Buxton Excavations and Gravel Supplies for their assistance, professionalism, and advice - words can’t express how grateful we were for the additional assistance, thank you to the teams.
